Lydiard & District Twinning Association
The Lydiards Twinning Association is twinned with Troisgots in Normandy.
Why are we linked? Robert de Tregoz, Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1191, held the estate of South Lydiard. Robert was descended from William de Tregoz, Lord of the Manor of Tregoz in Normandy. The name Tregoz eventually became Troisgots.
The historic church at Troisgots, La Chapelle sur Vire, contains an inscription to Robert de Tregoz; a similar inscription can be found in St. Mary's Church, Lydiard Tregoze.
Thus our French "twins" have a historical link with our villages going back over 800 years.
The area is based on the commune of Tessy, near St. Lo. For the historical links between the villages visit the website.
These days our links are based around annual visits. In 2004 we spent 3 nights in France timed to coincide with the D-Day celebrations. In 2006 we sampled French life at the ancient country fair at Lessay.
In the intervening years it is our turn to host the French. They normally spend one day on an organised visit and one full day with their host families. We always have a fantastic time and many long-standing friendships have been formed.
Between visits we keep up a busy programme of social events. This year it includes a Silent Auction, a barbeque, a skittles evening and a party – click on the "Event Calendar" on the website.
If you enjoy visiting France, and would like to experience staying with a French family first hand, then do consider becoming a member. You do not need to speak French! We have some linguists among our members, and some who speak little or no French. Lack of language skills need not be a bar to enjoying yourself.
If you are not sure about the visits, but would like to join a friendly group and enjoy the social events, we would still welcome you.
If you would like to know more please use the email links on our website and we will get back to you.
