Swindon Cultural Partnership
The Swindon Cultural Partnership is a flexible organisation supporting deliverers and consumers of culture in Swindon. The Partnership, which is a company limited by guarantee, responds to the cultural needs of Swindon through long term, self-sustainable development. SCP has been working, with Swindon Borough Council (SBC), towards a comprehensive Cultural Strategy for Swindon. Initially, a high-level strategy and discussion document was developed and published in 10 Thoughts for Swindon Culture. This was accepted and signed off by SBC in 2008. It has since been agreed that SCP will lead on the development of culture (including arts, heritage, leisure, sports and libraries) in Swindon.
This is in particular response to one of three high-level priorities in the strategy, described as: creating the right environment and infrastructure for cultural activity to grow, develop and be enjoyed by all.
For SCP, the term development is further defined as actions that will:
* ensure there is more culture, reaching more people, in Swindon
*demonstrate, through exemplars, more viable and sustainable approaches to culture
*champion, and assist in, plans for cultural infrastructure in local regeneration
*engender stronger relationships across all sectors advocate the value of culture (social, intrinsic or financial) at all levels
In parallel, SBC will focus on the delivery of cultural activity in line with its wider responsibilities (e.g. education, health, community cohesion), as well as looking after the borough’s cultural assets and supporting a number of local cultural delivery bodies. Overall plan SCP’s core actions revolve around the development of good-practice models for sustainable cultural development in Swindon.
These are being developed (in the real world) through engagement with cultural bodies, the commercial sector and community representation. "The Swindon Cultural Partnership is a great example of business, arts organisations and local government working together with the voluntary and community sectors to put Swindon on the map as a vibrant and flourishing town."
