Swindon Tennis Club

The Swindon Tennis Club was formed in 2001 by the former members of the British Rail Tennis Club, which was originally called Great Western Railways Staff Association and had been located in Shrivenham Road, Swindon.

The G.W.R was taken over by British Rail property board in 1948 when the railways were nationalised. In the late 1990's the sports grounds were sold off for development of new housing with a sports ground (including 4 flood lit tennis courts. The plan failed to gain planning consents and left the Tennis club homeless.

The club relocated to the Courts at the St Marks Tennis ground and was renamed Swindon Tennis Club. Beryl Watts became Secretary and Match secretary. Norman Sewell Chairman and Neil Allen junior co-ordinator. The membership of the new club stood at 30 adults and 25 juniors. St Marks lack of any club house facility caused the membership to dwindel so after 2 seasons S.T.C relocated again to the Delta Tennis Centre. The membership of both adults and junior sections has grown each year since with all members able to enjoy social and competitive tennis. The clubs teams achieved 11 awards in the Swindon & District League in 2006 and awarded the Club of the Year Trophy. Beryl and Neil's contributions were both recognised with nominations for Volunteers of the Year.
