Swindon Young Musicians

Swindon Young Musicians has three main sections each with extra groups happening on different days, mostly at the Music Centre based at Churchfields School

If you have a child or children between the ages of three and twenty three you may find something of interest below.

The SYM Rock School takes place on a Tuesday evening and is led by Music Development Leader Paul Ashman. This is an excellent opportunity for students with a high ability of musicianship to form rock and pop bands, compose their own music, perform in public and enter competitions. Due to the high success of the Rock School, satalite groups have been set up around Swindon.

Music Development Leader Dougall Prophet is the Head of the Senior SYM which takes place on a Wednesday evening. The groups are made up of the Senior Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Flute Choir, String Ensemble, and Senior Percussion Ensemble with other senior groups taking place on other nights such as the Recorder Consort and Guitar Ensemble. Most students have to audition to obtain a place in these ensembles. There are many exciting opportunities for the young musicians of Swindon. The Jazz Orchestra frequently plays at local functions amd national events such as the Marlborough Jazz Festival.

The Junior SYM groups are headed by Jason Wrobel. Junior SYM provides a huge range of opportunities for students to take part in music in a variety of ways. They take children from as young as 3 years of age in the Kindergarten group, through to secondary school age. There are beginner ensembles for all instruments and voices. The happy and fun ethos of the Junior SYM allows all the children to progress from beginner through to the intermediate levels which then gives them the opportunity to use this as a springboard to the senior ensembles. Many students at the intermediate level take both GCSE and A-level music, whilst others become young stars with some 11 year olds playing in the senior bands.

SYM is a club to give Swindon's Young Musicians between the ages of three and twenty three many opportunities they would not receive elsewhere. It is run by the Local Authority Music Service in partnership with the Friends Charitable Association who are volunteers that meet regularly to support this large club.
