Pre 2000 Details
The earliest recorded information of the club is contained in the Swindon Advertiser & Monthly Record dated 24 JULY 1854. It reports on the match between Wootton Bassett and the New Swindon club held on the Wootton Bassett Ground.
The ground currently used is part of the 8 acre sports ground donated in 1930 to the Wootton Bassett Sports Association by a local benefactor Major Gerard Buxton. The Pavilion was donated by a local farmer Richard Parsons and cost £1000.
Following a short break in the 1960s the club was re-formed in 1967 due mainly to the leadership and hard work of George Tuckett, headmaster of St Bartholomew Junior School at that time. He remained Chairman of the club for 25 years.
In 1974 the club entered Div 2 of the Wiltshire League and progressed to Premier Division of the new Ushers Wiltshire League in 1981. During the 1980s the club began to benefit from the work put into developing its own young players. This was rewarded with 3 consecutive Wiltshire Premier League titles 1988/9/90 under the captaincy of Rod Smith. Despite their success the club could not achieve promotion to a higher grade of cricket. Unlike other sports there was no pyramid league structure at that time.
In 1995 the club was accepted into Div 2 of the Alliance League playing strong teams from the Bristol District and senior Wiltshire clubs who had left the Wiltshire League earlier. Promotion was gained in 1998 to the 1st Division.
The official re-opening of the Pavilion took place in June 1997 carried out jointly by Albert Davey, Club Chairman, and Dennis Holder, Chairman of Wootton Bassett Sports Association. This followed a 3 year restoration project with considerable input by the members. Much improved facilities have been provided for the players.
The 1999 season brought the introduction of the long awaited pyramid league structure for the Western Division. This provided the opportunity for every club to achieve playing at the highest level of regional club league cricket.
